Season finale in the 3rd division
Ingolstadt ends the season with a goal fest – but it is only enough for 12th place
A 5:1 at the end sets a strong final point, but only changes the overall picture to a limited extent: FC Ingolstadt 04 finishes the 2025/2026 season in the 3rd division after 38 games with 49 points in 12th place. The record (13 wins, 10 draws, 15 losses) and the goal difference of 65:56 (+9) reflect a season in which offensive quality repeatedly flashed – but too rarely remained stable over weeks.
The strong final sprint masks the inconsistent season
The last few weeks provide arguments for a conciliatory impression. In the final five league games, Ingolstadt achieved three wins and two losses. Away, there was a 3:0 at TSG 1899 Hoffenheim II and a 2:1 at TSV 1860 Munich. On the other hand, there were setbacks that explain the pattern of the season well: a 0:1 at home against VfL Osnabrück and the high-scoring 3:5 against Erzgebirge Aue. In such matches, it became clear how quickly Ingolstadt switched between convincing phases and open flanks this season.
These fluctuations are clearly visible in the overall calculation. 13 wins are a solid foundation, but 15 losses are too many to sustainably push towards the upper third of the table. The final sprint stabilized the table picture – but did not compensate for the points that were lost in earlier parts of the season due to too many setbacks.
Many goals, but too often vulnerable – why it didn't go higher
65 goals scored is a striking value for a team in 12th place and underlines that Ingolstadt had enough attacking power over long stretches to dominate games or turn them around in a short time. At the same time, 56 goals conceded explain why this offensive output did not yield more: Those who score regularly on average, but remain too open too often, have to win more games "through goals" – and quickly lose their grip on days without defensive stability.
It was especially the high-scoring matches that made this visible. In the 3:5 against Aue, Ingolstadt was present offensively, but too vulnerable defensively to at least secure a point. Such results are often the difference in a tight league between a calm midfield position and the possibility of staying within striking distance of the top.
The 5:1 against Mannheim as the final point – strong, but without effect on the table
On the last matchday, Ingolstadt made a statement at the Audi Sportpark: The 5:1 against SV Waldhof Mannheim on May 16 was the highest home win of the season and confirmed the positive trend of the final phase. However, the clear success had no more leverage for the final placement – the Schanzer remained at 49 points and finished in 12th place.
Thus, the conclusion is sober: Ingolstadt ends the season neither disappointingly nor truly convincingly. The offensive potential was visible and could be called upon again at the end of the season. Over 38 matchdays, however, consistency was lacking – especially in the balance between goal production and vulnerability to conceding goals – to make more out of a decent midfield year. 12th place is therefore less an outlier than a logical classification of a season with strong moments, but too many fluctuations.
